Beyond counting are the lives and homes that booze has wrecked. Alcohol is: milk for the masses, a snare for the simple, false friend for the lonely, nerves for the weak, and poison for the liver. Alcohol will lead a father to hang out with buzzards and flesh rather than be at home, Spirit-filled, with his child on his knee. Liquor will steal food off the table and shoes off the children’s feet. It will turn laughter to tears.
A former drunkard, Mel Trotter said that the worst drink was the first drink.
“For the time is already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousals, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.” (1 Ptr.4.3 NAS)(Prov 23.20, 29-35).
America is one big drinking party. Weak, immature Christians will swap their one clean testimony for a beer bottle buzz. Have you ever heard a convincing salvation testimony from a real Christian in a drinking hole with alcohol on his breath, a glass in his hand saying: “Have I ever told you how Jesus changed my life?”
Trick Q?: One innocent drink is OK, isn’t it? A. Yes and no. One social drink will not steal a true believer’s salvation but it can damage his convincing testimony before a watching world. We are not saved by good works nor having a zero blood alcohol level (Rom 3.24; 4.5; Tit 3.5). BUT how many really stop after one ‘innocent’ drink? If it is so innocent do you approve of the pastor/Sunday school teacher drinking his innocent beer as he teaches?
Q–Does it help or harm the cause of Jesus when a drunkard or nonbeliever see any Christian come out of the store carrying booze? Has the innocent drink replaced one’s godly friends with the worldly crowd?
