Tolerance for all beliefs, all lifestyles is a common mantra today. But does the God of the Bible agree with all this exchanging timeless, Bible truth for so called “love,” acceptance, anything goes, mold-your-own-god, compromise?
1. From the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord your God who rescued you from slavery in Egypt, do not worship any other gods besides me. Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. You must never worship of bow down to them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! . . .” (Exod 20.2-5 NLT).
We note here Jehovah God’s nonnegotiable commands regarding idols. There is no room for misunderstanding God’s position nor compromise.
2. Idols steal glory from the true creator of the universe. God is our Provider. He alone deserves the thanks and praise and glory for it. Idols are based on a lie. They need to be exposed.
3. “Idols always degrade.” – Erwin Lutzer. Imagine a man giving a coin to a beggar by flipping it into a garbage pail of slop. The beggar must dig for it. Next think of a grown man bowing down to worship a piece of (carved) firewood. (Isaiah 44). Is that not also degrading? Dumb? Blinded? Idols pull man down. Make him more like an animal.
4. Idols separate God and man. This happened in the OT when the Israelites began worshipping idols (1 Kings 18; Isaiah 44.6-20). By stealing worship due Creator,Provider, Sustainer God is rightly offended. Man gets punished. Man is the loser. The serpent came between Adam, Eve and God, their wonderful Provider. (Gen 3).
